Mentoring

Each student is matched with a caring adult mentor who meets with the student at his/her school twice a month. Mentors provide academic and behavioral motivation, guidance, friendship, support and are encouraged to continue their service over a multi-year period with their Take Stock in Children student.

College and career coaching

Each student in the program is assigned a student advocate/case manager who meets with the student and provides assistance and program support to ensure his or her academic success. College Readiness Coaches work closely with mentors and school personnel to confirm that each student is achieving continued success.

Scholarships

Each student who successfully fulfills the requirements of Take Stock in Children receives a fully paid college tuition scholarship. Students who prefer post-secondary vocational training may select a vocational education option or a course of study at a community college leading to a two-year technical degree.

We offer our students caring volunteer mentors, student advocacy, college readiness, and college scholarships. Our comprehensive services start in middle school, continue through high school, and include post-secondary retention and completion services.

How each one actually works

Students

Become a Scholar

Scholars sign a contract and earn a fully paid college tuition scholarship.

How it works

You are identified early. TSIC Broward identifies at-risk, low-income youth in grades sixth through ninth.
You sign the contract. Maintain a "C" or higher in all classes, good attendance and behavior, remain drug-free and crime-free, and meet with your mentor twice a month.
You are coached the whole way. Every scholar is assigned a College Readiness Coach who meets with them at school, tracks academics and attendance, and makes sure mentor sessions are happening.
You earn it, and it is paid for. Each student who successfully fulfills the requirements receives a fully paid college tuition scholarship.

Application requirements

Mentors

Become a Mentor

Twice a month at the student's school. Training, background check, and placement provided.

The four steps

Step 1. Complete and submit a TSIC Mentoring Application.
Step 2. Complete and submit a Broward County Public Schools Volunteer Application online.
Step 3. Attend a virtual mentor orientation and complete fingerprinting session.
Step 4. Receive a Level 2 Clearance from Broward County Public Schools and a Match Letter from Take Stock in Children, then begin mentoring.

It becomes a scholarship. Locally, TSIC has awarded nearly $20.3 million.
